Let’s look to Jesus as our example… Listening prayer is a foreign concept to most of the western church. What if I told you that listening prayer is the way Jesus prayed? In His own words, Jesus said this, “The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. John 5:19
So we must look to Him as our example. How did He see and know what the Father was doing; in other words, how did He hear God? First of all, He got alone. Most of the time, Jesus went to the mountain to pray. It was a quiet place away from all the throngs of people including His best friends and Facebook. He heard God by quieting himself and listening with His spiritual ears to what His Father was saying. In this manner, He was able to see and discern what the Father was telling Him and wanted released in the earth. We need to see and hear first in the Spirit before we open our mouths and begin to decree. We are so prone to randomly pick out a scripture that we think best fits the situation we are praying about based on what we see with our natural eyes. Wouldn’t our prayers be a whole lot more effective if we allowed God to first speak to us before we began to pray out of our soulish realm? One time I was in a prayer meeting with a pastor from South Africa. Do you know what he asked me? He said, “Why do you do all the talking and not any listening” when you pray? I thought about his question and came to the realization that he was right. Prayer is a two-way conversation birthed out of our intimacy and communion with the Father and our lifestyle of worship. It is imperative that I position myself to hear God — then pray what I hear. I believe this is the “prayer that changes things”.
